This appears to be a kernel bug in Feisty: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/sane-backends/+bug/94226 I used this scanner for a long time on Edgy and it worked beautifully. In the meantime, if I figure something out, I'll post it here. So does a full scanned image.
